The 2008-2009 season of the Augusta Choral Society is right around the corner and you can be a part of it.
The opening concert of the season is part of the new Westabou Festival and takes place in mid-September. The concert will focus on music that reflects perspectives on stars, the universe, the cosmos. We will include repertoire by Morten Lauridsen, Joseph Haydn, Mark Kilstofte, Johannes Brahms, and others. Morten Lauridsen’s setting of Sure On This Shining Night is spectacular. I promise that this concert will be heavenly.
In mid-November we will be anticipating the Christmas season with a performance of Amahl and the Night Visitors, the venerable chamber opera by the late Gian-Carlo Menotti. In the space of Sacred Heart, the voice soaring into the upper chambers, it may be one of the most stunning Amahls ever. Yes, it is before Thanksgiving, but can you ever really get enough Christmas?
In March and in the magnificent confines of St. Paul’s Church in downtown Augusta, we bring you an evening of Mozart, focusing on the Requiem. It’s been several years since the ACS performed the Mozart Requiem and we will be looking at the work with new eyes.
And, finally, in late May, we present our second Memorial Day Weekend Concert. In 2008, we began this concert as a salute to those who had sacrificed so much in service to our country. That concert was a resounding success and we are determined to make it an annual event. Come sing with us, rejoice with us, remember with us, and weep with us as we hear readings and rejoice with music that helps us to focus on the meaning of sacrifice, love of country, duty, and honor.
